| May 1: The Samtse district court yesterday sentenced a 45-year-old man from Chargharey to nine years in prison for voluntary manslaughter.
Ram Prasad Rai was found guilty of killing his 14-year-old niece.
The Samtse drangpon said the man would have been given the life sentence. He said the sentence was reduced because he has been diagnosed with paranoid Schizophrenia, a severe mental disorder.
The murder took place last December.
The victim was returning home with a friend after colleting fire wood. Ram Prasad Rai teased them as they passed by his house. When they took offense, he caught hold of the basket the victim was carrying. She dropped her basket and ran away. But in the process, she also dropped her mobile phone. Later when she came back to look for her mobile, Ram Prasad Rai caught her and cut her throat.
According to a press release from the court, Ram Prasad Rai was also under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident. |
